“Whitewashed” film by Mark Patrick George (YouTube)
What are the ways in which you describe yourself to others?
By gender? Religion? Sexual identity? Marital status? Familial status (parent, sibling, grandparent, etc.)?
Is race ever a part of that description?
Is it important for white people to perceive and understand whiteness? If so, why or why not?
The short film Whitewashed refers to what people have lost in the process of “becoming white.” Immigrants gave up their individual identity to form a new mainstream identity, for example. There are other suggestions of loss that come out of the interviews. What else might we have lost in our unintentional and inadvertent conforming to a privileged society?
