Who We Are

First gathered together in 1701, we stand as a community dedicated to proclaiming the good news of God’s love for the world. In 1957, the members of the Plymouth Church voted to join the United Church of Christ (UCC).

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is at the center of our common life. Through worship and the study of scripture, through prayer and song we enter into and nurture our relationship with the divine presence of a Living God.

We believe in an open table. When we celebrate Communion, all people—and we do mean all—are invited and welcome. This idea extends to all aspects of our community of faith. We recognize the historical creeds of the universal church; at the same time, we do not require members to subscribe to any tests of faith. We believe that all God’s children are free to follow Christ in their own way. Since truth and justice are not easily deciphered in solitude we gather in community to support one another and encourage each other along the journey.

The United Church of Christ

The Plymouth Church is part of the United Church of Christ (UCC), a young denomination with old roots. Formed in 1957, the UCC brought together the Congregational Christian Churches and the Evangelical and Reformed Church. In Massachusetts, a large majority of the churches were "Congregational" and still carry this name today. The Congregational Church dates back to the 1620's with the Pilgrims at Plymouth and the Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. It is also the largest Protestant denomination in Massachusetts.

In more recent years, the United Church of Christ has initiated a marketing campaign around the phrase: "God is still speaking," Inspired by John Robinson’s quote as he bid farewell to the Mayflower from England "the Lord had more truth and light yet to break forth out of his holy Word," and inspired by humorist Gracie Allen’s comment to "never place a period where God has placed a comma," the United Church of Christ seeks to always listen to God’s continuing revelation through scripture and in the world.
